WHEN it comes to knowledge

of the round-ball code,

former Knights, NSW and Australian

centre Matt Gidley has retained

bragging rights over younger

brother Kurt.

A one-time NSW junior schoolboy

soccer teammate of Harry

Kewell and Mark Viduka, Matt

topped the inaugural Herald tipsters

poll for the 2006-07

A-League season.

Kurt claimed some of the

credit for that victory, filling in

occasionally after Matt left early

last year to link with English

Super League giants St Helens.

In Matt's absence, Kurt took

over on a full-time tipping basis for

the recently completed A-League

regular season but had to settle for

a four-way share of third behind

joint winners David Lowe and

Renee Valentine.

While in Newcastle visiting family

and friends for Christmas, Matt

set the record straight on Kurt's

involvement in his success.

'I had an impeccable one and

only season,' Matt boasted.

'He'd be doing well to knock me

off my mantel there. I think he filled

in one week and it was my worst

week of the whole season.'

Ex-Socceroo Lowe, who opened

with a flawless four-from-four in

round one and was never far from

top spot all summer, and Herald

soccer reporter Valentine were

tied on 35.

Gidley, Sydney Morning Herald

soccer reporter Mike Cockerill,

Herald soccer reporter James

Gardiner and Matildas captain

Cheryl Salisbury were in a logjam

on 33.

Herald sports editor Kevin

Cranson and 1233 ABC commentator

Aaron Kearney were next best

on 32, pipping Squadron representative

Todd Street (31).

That left Herald reporter Robert

Dillon, whose tactic of tipping the

Jets and three draws each week

served him well for a while, with

the wooden spoon on 27.
